Tigray Youth Movement Announces Formation, Calls for Youth-Led Political Shift
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — April 21, 2026 | Horn News Hub
A newly formed group calling itself the Tigray Youth Movement has announced its establishment, declaring its intention to mobilize young people to play a leading role in addressing the political, economic, and social challenges facing Tigray.
In a press release issued on April 20, 2026 (12 Miazia 2018 E.C.), the movement said it was created to organize and advance the aspirations of Tigrayan youth, arguing that young people must shift from being passive observers to active drivers of change.
The group stated that Tigray is facing what it described as a severe existential crisis and emphasized that youth have a decisive role in rescuing the region from continued instability and decline. It added that the movement aims to pursue peaceful and lawful struggle to help break what it called a cycle of systemic collapse affecting Tigray.
“The youth of Tigray should not remain observers in matters concerning their people and homeland. They must become owners of change and organized advocates of their aspirations,” the statement said.
Founders: “This Time Is for Youth”
Speaking to Horn News Hub in a phone interview, one of the founders and organizers of the Tigray Youth Movement said the group is currently undergoing legal procedures to obtain official recognition and licensing from federal authorities and the Addis Ababa city administration.
According to the organizer, the movement is being structured as a legally recognized civic platform aimed at ensuring youth participation in shaping Tigray’s future.
“This time is for youth,” the founder said. “The fate of Tigray is now in the hands of the youth of Tigray.”
He further argued that for more than five decades, Tigrayan youth have largely been excluded from key economic, political, and social decision-making processes.
“For the last 51 years, Tigrayan youth were not part of major decisions. Everything was led by a generation that emerged in the 1960s. That generation made the political and military decisions, but youth were never given the opportunity to participate,” he said.
The founder also criticized what he described as outdated leadership approaches, arguing that previous leadership structures were shaped primarily by armed struggle rather than development-focused governance.
“That generation has limited new ideas. They mainly know war. Youth were never given the chance to contribute to economic, political, and social decision-making,” he added.
He emphasized that the newly formed movement seeks to change that dynamic by empowering youth to take part in leadership, governance, and reconstruction efforts in Tigray.
Criticism of “Change Seekers Movement”
The Tigray Youth Movement also criticized a group known as the “Change Seekers Movement,” accusing it of operating without transparency, inclusiveness, or accountability. According to the press release, the newly formed youth movement believes the group’s activities run counter to the interests of Tigrayan youth and the broader population.
The movement called for the establishment of what it described as a more inclusive and transparent platform that represents all stakeholders seeking change in Tigray.
It also urged the suspension of activities conducted under the banner of opposition groups that, according to the statement, lack participation, accountability, and clear leadership.
Concerns Over Youth Representation and Political Pressure
The press release further warned against what it described as actions carried out in the name of youth that risk creating division rather than unity. It called for efforts that strengthen youth participation and encourage inclusive dialogue.
In addition, the Tigray Youth Movement raised concerns about what it described as pressure being exerted on the Tigray Peace Force (TPF), which it characterized as a force composed of individuals displaced from their homes and livelihoods due to political instability.
The movement called for an immediate end to such pressures and urged stakeholders to prioritize stability and protection of affected communities.
Fundraising Warning
The statement also addressed a planned fundraising event scheduled for April 21, 2026 (13 Miazia 2018 E.C.), warning Tigrayan businesspeople and donors to carefully consider whom they are supporting financially.
It cautioned that funds raised without transparency and accountability could worsen the humanitarian situation rather than alleviate it.
“Your resources should help reduce the suffering of the people of Tigray, not contribute to prolonging their hardship,” the statement said.
Youth-Led Transformation
The newly established movement concluded its statement by emphasizing youth leadership as central to Tigray’s future.
“A people led by youth will succeed and transform,” the statement concluded.
The emergence of the Tigray Youth Movement comes at a time of growing political uncertainty in Tigray, with increasing calls for generational leadership change and broader participation in governance. Observers say youth-led initiatives could play a significant role in shaping the region’s political direction in the coming weeks and months.
