African Union urges restraint as clashes erupt in Mogadishu

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — June 4, 2026 | Horn News Hub

The African Union Commission has called for immediate restraint following reports of armed clashes in civilian areas of Mogadishu, expressing concern over rising insecurity in the Somali capital.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Commission said it was deeply alarmed by the reported security developments and warned that continued fighting could further endanger civilians and destabilize the situation.

It urged all parties involved to halt hostilities without delay and exercise maximum restraint, stressing the need to protect civilians and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

The AU also called on Somali political actors to address their differences through dialogue and constitutional mechanisms, rather than through armed confrontation.

The statement highlighted ongoing political stabilization efforts led by Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, noting the importance of inclusive national dialogue, reconciliation, and consensus building in restoring long term stability.

The Commission further confirmed it would continue monitoring developments closely while reaffirming the readiness of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and security in the country.

The statement comes at a time of heightened political and security sensitivity in Mogadishu, where sporadic clashes have raised concerns over the durability of ongoing stabilization efforts.
