The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, held talks with Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos, on Tuesday evening, focusing on ongoing institutional reforms within the African Union and efforts to strengthen the organization’s financial sustainability.
According to the African Union Commission, the discussions centered on the implementation of AU institutional reforms, with particular emphasis on securing predictable and sustainable financing for the continental body.
During the meeting, Youssouf expressed appreciation to William Ruto for his role as the African Union’s Reform Champion and provided an update on progress made under the reform agenda.
Both officials highlighted the strategic importance of sustainable financing as a key pillar for building an independent, effective, and sovereign African Union. They emphasized that reliable funding mechanisms are essential to strengthening the Union’s capacity to implement its programs and respond to continental priorities.
The Chairperson and the Ethiopian foreign minister also reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with AU member states to advance the reform and financing agenda.
The meeting comes as the African Union continues efforts to reduce reliance on external funding and enhance the institution’s financial autonomy through ongoing reform initiatives.
