Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abebe has been recognized by the global Act for Early Years initiative as a “Champion for Early Childhood Development,” in acknowledgment of her efforts to advance policies and investments supporting young children.
According to information released by the Addis Ababa City Administration, the recognition highlights the mayor’s leadership and the city’s initiatives aimed at improving early childhood development, particularly through the “Addis Ababa Future Hope Early Childhood Development Initiative.”
A certificate issued by the Act for Early Years partners states that Mayor Adanech was honored for her commitment to advancing early childhood development and for inspiring action among fellow leaders in support of the first Global Early Years Summit, scheduled to take place in 2027.
The certificate, dated May 11, 2026, recognizes Mayor Adanech’s role as a Champion for Early Childhood and acknowledges her contribution to promoting early years development within local and international policy discussions.
The Act for Early Years initiative works to place early childhood development at the center of government policies and global investment agendas. The recognition was presented on behalf of the initiative’s partners by former United Kingdom Prime Minister and United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown, in collaboration with partner organizations including UNICEF and UNESCO.
Observers say the recognition could strengthen Addis Ababa’s profile as a city seeking to promote early childhood development and expand investment in child-focused programs across Africa.
