Ethiopian Ambassador Reiterates Country’s Position on Sea Access at Dubai Panel Discussion

Dubai — Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Ambassador Jemal Beker (PhD), reiterated Ethiopia’s position on securing reliable access to the sea during a panel discussion held at the Dubai Arts Club under the theme Trade, Energy, and Changing Regional Dynamics.

Speaking at the event, the ambassador said Ethiopia’s pursuit of sea access is aimed at strengthening economic resilience, promoting regional integration, and supporting long-term stability. He emphasized that the country’s policy is based on cooperation and diplomacy rather than aggression or territorial expansion.

According to the ambassador, Ethiopia’s position is guided by four key considerations. He stated that Ethiopia’s historical ties to maritime access have played an important role in the country’s civilization and economic development. He also noted that evolving security challenges in the Red Sea region, including terrorism and piracy, make reliable access to the sea important from a national and regional security perspective.

The ambassador further described sea access as an economic necessity for Ethiopia, citing the country’s population of more than 135 million people and its growing economy. In addition, he said Ethiopia views enhanced regional connectivity and infrastructure development as essential components of its foreign policy, with the objective of advancing regional integration and shared prosperity across the Horn of Africa.

Ambassador Jemal said Ethiopia remains committed to pursuing its interests through constructive diplomacy based on dialogue, mutual benefit, and cooperation. He argued that inclusive approaches to maritime governance and regional connectivity are more likely to promote stability and economic interdependence than exclusionary arrangements.

He also reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to working with neighboring countries and international partners to support peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region.

The remarks were delivered as part of a broader discussion on trade, energy, and the changing geopolitical dynamics of the region, with participants examining opportunities and challenges affecting the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
