The Solidarity of Tigrayans for Independence and Liberty (STIL) has issued a statement condemning what it describes as the ongoing forced conscription, locally known as Giffa (ግፋ), of Tigrayan youth by the TPLF and its armed wing.
In its statement, STIL argued that previous periods of armed mobilization in Tigray relied largely on voluntary participation. The organization contrasted those periods with the current situation, claiming that the reported use of forced recruitment reflects a decline in public confidence in the leadership responsible for the mobilization.

STIL expressed support for Tigrayan youth, stating that they should have access to education, employment, and opportunities to contribute to the region’s recovery rather than being drawn into armed conflict against their will.
The organization called on communities in Tigray to help protect young people from forced conscription. It also urged civil society organizations to publicly condemn the practice, encouraged independent media to continue reporting on alleged cases of forced recruitment and their impact, and appealed to Tigrayan political parties to take a common position opposing forced conscription.
Addressing young people who may be affected, STIL advised them to seek safe and lawful ways to avoid forced recruitment and, if conscripted against their will, to use caution and pursue opportunities to leave without endangering themselves.
The organization concluded by reiterating its position that forced conscription constitutes a crime and called for an end to the practice.
The TPLF had not responded publicly to STIL’s allegations at the time the statement was issued. The claims made by STIL have not been independently verified.
