
National Human Rights Consultation in Jigjiga brought together federal and regional government representatives, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and other stakeholders to discuss the advancement of human rights and strengthen cooperation across Ethiopia.

Speaking during the consultation, EHRC Commissioner Beehanu Adello commended the leadership of Somali Regional State President H.E. Mustafa Mohammed Omar for what he described as pragmatic measures that have contributed to improving the human rights situation in the region.
According to the commissioner, the progress recorded in the Somali National Regional State demonstrates that sustained political commitment, institutional reform, and constructive engagement can produce tangible improvements in the protection and promotion of human rights. He noted that while challenges remain, the region’s experience provides valuable lessons for strengthening human rights protection across Ethiopia.

Beehanu Adello said the leadership of President Mustafa Mohammed Omar has played a significant role in advancing reforms aimed at improving respect for human rights, including efforts that have contributed to addressing concerns related to unlawful detention and imprisonment, strengthening accountability, and promoting the rule of law.
The commissioner emphasized that protecting and promoting human rights is a shared responsibility requiring collaboration among federal institutions, regional governments, and development partners. He said continued cooperation would strengthen accountability, reinforce the rule of law, and contribute to building a more just, peaceful, and inclusive Ethiopia.

Beehanu Adello also expressed appreciation to the Government and the people of the Somali National Regional State for hosting the national consultation and for their hospitality, describing the event as an important platform for dialogue and cooperation on human rights issues.
