Addis Ababa, June 22, 2026 (AMECO) – Addis Ababa City Administration has officially launched its 2026 winter voluntary service program with the commencement of the Gedam Sefer Village of Benevolence project, an initiative aimed at improving living conditions for vulnerable residents while promoting solidarity and community service.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Mayor Adanech Abebe said the city administration is committed to creating “an environment of solidarity and a comfortable living space” through collaborative development efforts. She thanked residents for their support in the recent election and pledged to fulfill all commitments made to the public during the new term of office.

The Mayor announced that the first phase of the broader development program will include the construction of eight nine story residential buildings, two G+4 commercial centers, and sports facilities, with the Gedam Sefer Village of Benevolence forming part of the initiative. She noted that, alongside funding from the city administration, the project will be implemented through the contributions of patriotic investors and the wider public.
Arada Sub City Chief Executive Wendimu Omer described volunteerism as a service that comes from the heart and cannot be measured by money or salaries. He said the winter volunteer campaign symbolizes the creation of a village of compassion where the dignity of elderly citizens and vulnerable communities is restored and their hardships are eased.

Reflecting on the city’s volunteer achievements over the past eight years, Wendimu said more than 2.6 million volunteers have participated in various community service activities. These efforts have resulted in the construction of 46,461 houses, benefiting 207,930 vulnerable residents and senior citizens.
For the 2026 winter voluntary service campaign, he said 5,864 houses are planned for construction, benefiting more than 38,000 residents. He added that over 55.7 billion Birr has been mobilized through volunteer labor, in kind support, and financial contributions from residents, investors, and community members.

The winter voluntary service program officially began in Gedam Sefer, one of Addis Ababa’s historic neighborhoods, marking the start of a citywide campaign focused on improving housing, strengthening community solidarity, and supporting vulnerable citizens.
