The Delegation of the European Union to Ethiopia, together with the diplomatic missions of 22 European Union member states and the embassies of Canada, Norway, and Switzerland, has welcomed the conduct of Ethiopia’s 7th General Election held on June 1, 2026.

In a joint statement released on election day, the diplomatic missions commended the efforts of Ethiopia’s National Election Board (NEBE), election workers, political parties, candidates, and civil society organizations for their contributions to the electoral process.

The statement described the election as an important democratic exercise and acknowledged the work undertaken by stakeholders involved in organizing and participating in the vote.

The international partners also highlighted the role of regional observer missions, noting the participation of the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in monitoring the election. They said they look forward to reviewing the findings and assessments of the observer missions.

In addition, the diplomatic missions expressed hope that constituencies unable to conduct voting on June 1 would be provided with an opportunity to hold elections at a later date, ensuring broader participation in the electoral process.

The joint statement was issued by the European Union Delegation in Ethiopia alongside the diplomatic missions of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden, as well as Canada, Norway, and Switzerland.
