TPLF Declares It Terminates Pretoria Agreement, Signals Return to 2020 Mandate

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — April 19, 2026 | Horn News Hub

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front announced Sunday evening that it has terminated the Pretoria Peace Agreement, according to a statement released by the party.

The decision represents a major shift in Tigray’s post war political landscape and comes amid rising tensions over leadership legitimacy and governance in the region.

In the same statement, the TPLF said it plans to form a government based on the 2020 regional election, reinstating the administration led by Debretsion Gebremichael. The party framed the move as a return to what it described as a legitimate electoral mandate.

The TPLF also rejected the one year extension of Interim President Tadesse Worede’s term, calling it a unilateral decision by the federal government and lacking political legitimacy.

Neither President Tadesse Worede nor the federal government has issued an official response. However, statements from both sides are expected in the coming days.

The statement further indicated that cooperation described as ጽምዶ “death pact” with Eritrea’s ruling establishment would continue and strengthen, though no additional details were provided.

Political analysts say the decision to form a government based on the 2020 election could be seen as a direct challenge to the Pretoria Agreement framework, which established the interim administration as part of the peace process following the two year conflict in northern Ethiopia.

Some observers also warned that the move risks escalating tensions and undermining fragile peace efforts. Critics argue that the decision reflects a struggle for political control that could heighten instability if not managed through dialogue and constitutional mechanisms.

Analysts further caution that any renewed conflict would carry serious humanitarian and political consequences for Tigray, which is still recovering from the devastating war that ended following the Pretoria Agreement.

The coming days are expected to be critical as reactions emerge from regional leaders, the federal government, and international stakeholders.

More developments are expected.
