Adanech Abiebie has extended her wishes for International Mother’s Day, while highlighting what she described as major achievements in women’s empowerment and participation under the Addis Ababa city administration over the past five years.

In a message shared on her official social media platform on Sunday morning, the mayor thanked women in the capital for participating in a large public rally held along Churchill Street in support of the goals and aspirations of the ruling Prosperity Party ahead of Ethiopia’s upcoming 7th General and City-wide General Elections.

According to the statement, women from across Addis Ababa took part in the event, which coincided with International Mother’s Day celebrations.

Mayor Adanech said the city administration had worked to strengthen women’s social, economic, and political participation through a range of initiatives focused on employment, healthcare, and representation in leadership positions.

Among the projects mentioned were the establishment of the Abebech Gobena Maternity and Children’s Hospital, the creation of a Women’s Rehabilitation and Excellence Center, and the construction of injera production facilities aimed at supporting women economically.

She also stated that women accounted for 51 percent of the two million jobs reportedly created in Addis Ababa over the past five years.

The mayor further noted that women now represent more than 40 percent of the Addis Ababa City Council, adding that 54 percent of the candidates presented by the city for the upcoming general election are women.

In her remarks, Adanech linked women’s participation to the broader political agenda of the Prosperity Party, calling for continued support in the upcoming elections. She also referenced the party’s election symbol, a sheaf of wheat, as a symbol of unity and collective progress.

The statement emphasized themes of “Medemer,” or synergy, and prosperity, concepts frequently promoted by the Ethiopian government and the ruling party in recent years.
