Tensions are rising once again, fueled by the reestablishment of Tigray’s dissolved regional parliament, growing military activity, and the unraveling of the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement.
The TPLF has revived the regional council and legislative body, a move that effectively undermines the terms of the Pretoria accord.
Senior figures within the TPLF, including Debretsion Gebremichael, have openly signaled preparations for armed resistance, in clear breach of the ceasefire. Reports indicate forced recruitment of young people and efforts to forge strategic partnerships beyond Ethiopia’s borders.
The proscribed Tigray People’s Liberation Front has relaunched a war-related messaging, raising fears of another destructive conflict in the region. These mobilizations, according to faction leaders, are explicitly intended to ready Tigray for renewed hostilities against the Ethiopian federal government.
Statements from TPLF’s leaders Debretsion Gebremichael and Fetlework Gebregziabher confirm their intent to engage in armed confrontation and to collaborate with groups opposed to the Ethiopian state, both domestically and internationally.
A coordinated propaganda effort has gained momentum, with leaders asserting: “With our preparations finalized, we will launch our actions from the gates of Addis Ababa together with our allies.”
Analysts caution that such language represents a serious escalation, threatening not only northern Ethiopia but potentially the broader Horn of Africa, especially if the international community continues to refrain from intervention or fails to apply pressure on TPLF leadership. This resurgence is widely seen as a direct challenge to the peace framework established by the November 2022 Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement.
Despite holding a strong position—and the ability to dismantle the group entirely—the Federal Government opted for negotiation, allowing the faction to remain as part of a broader effort to enable recovery, reconciliation, and long-term stability in Tigray.
