Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been appointed as the African Union Champion for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Health, a move that underscores both his administration’s digital agenda and the country’s growing role in shaping Africa’s technological future.
The announcement was made by the African Union, which highlighted Abiy’s leadership in advancing digital transformation and emerging technologies across the continent. The appointment places Ethiopia at the center of ongoing efforts to expand the use of artificial intelligence in public services, healthcare, and economic development.
In its official communication, the African Union noted that the Prime Minister’s leadership has helped position artificial intelligence as a strategic tool for sovereignty, efficiency, and inclusive growth. It further stated that his advocacy for technological autonomy would contribute to strengthening Africa’s global standing in responsible and equitable AI adoption.
Over the past several years, Ethiopia has accelerated reforms in digitization under Abiy’s leadership. These include the expansion of digital infrastructure, the rollout of e-government services, and increased investment in innovation ecosystems. The government has also established a national Artificial Intelligence Institute and introduced a national AI strategy aimed at guiding long-term development in the sector.
Plans are also underway to establish a dedicated artificial intelligence university, which officials say will focus on research, skills development, and collaboration across African countries. The initiative is expected to support the continent’s capacity to compete in advanced technologies while addressing local development challenges.
The appointment comes at a time when African governments are increasingly exploring AI-driven solutions to improve service delivery and strengthen economic resilience. Ethiopia’s positioning within this agenda reflects a broader continental push to reduce technological dependency and build homegrown innovation systems.
In a related development, Prime Minister Abiy has also announced a 2030 Technology Initiative, a forward looking plan aimed at accelerating innovation, expanding digital access, and positioning Ethiopia as a key player in Africa’s technology landscape over the coming decade.
