Ethiopian Airlines Resumes Flights to Tigray After Five Day Suspension
Ethiopian Airlines has resumed flights to and from Tigray following a five day suspension that began on January 29, 2026.
The airline halted services after reports emerged of clashes between federal government forces and Tigrayan armed groups in northwestern parts of the region. Flights were suspended without a detailed public explanation. Passengers who had booked tickets received notifications citing uncertain circumstances in Tigray as the reason for the disruption.
The suspension had a noticeable impact across the region. Residents, travelers, humanitarian workers, and businesses were affected, with many reporting delays in movement, interrupted operations, and heightened anxiety during the period flights were grounded.
During the same week, reports circulated of fighting between TPLF combatants and the Ethiopian National Defense Force in areas including Tselemti and the Rays front. These developments were cited by local residents as a possible factor behind the airline’s decision, although no official confirmation has linked the clashes directly to the flight suspension.
As of now, Ethiopian Airlines has resumed operations to Tigray, restoring a critical transport link for the region. Authorities and the airline have not issued further statements regarding the security situation or the criteria used for suspending and reinstating flights.
