U.S. Ambassador Ervin Massinga Visits University of Gondar, Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Addis Ababa,July 16,2026:
A delegation led by U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Massinga visited the University of Gondar, where they toured the institution’s teaching, research, and healthcare facilities.

The delegation was welcomed by University President Dr. Asrat Atsedeweyn and senior university officials.

During the visit, Ambassador Massinga toured the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital and the Harry S. Truman American Corner (library) located at the university’s Emperor Tewodros Campus.

At the hospital, the delegation observed tuberculosis (TB), HIV, and other healthcare services. Medical professionals also briefed the Ambassador on the U.S.-supported TB prevention and treatment programs being implemented at the facility.

Ambassador Massinga expressed satisfaction with the progress made and reaffirmed the U.S. government’s continued support to strengthen the hospital’s capacity. He also pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation with the University of Gondar in education, research, healthcare, and institutional partnerships.

The Ambassador further said the United States would help expand the university’s collaboration with peer institutions in the U.S. to support its long-term vision and academic development.

Officials also noted that, under the US$1.466 billion bilateral health agreement signed between the United States and Ethiopia in December 2025, the U.S. continues to support efforts to strengthen Ethiopia’s healthcare system.

During his visit to the Amhara Region, Ambassador Massinga also met with humanitarian partners and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to building regional resilience through faster, more accountable, and more effective humanitarian response mechanisms.

University President Dr. Asrat Atsedeweyn described the University of Gondar and the U.S. government as long-standing partners in advancing science, healthcare, and community development.

He added that the Ambassador’s visit would further enhance the university’s teaching, research, and community service missions, while also supporting its ongoing transition toward greater institutional autonomy.
