Ghanaian travel content creator and pan African digital voice Wode Maya has called for a more borderless Africa, saying easier movement across the continent could significantly transform the work of social media creators and strengthen African storytelling.

Speaking during the First African Social Media Influencers Summit (ASMIS 2026) underway at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa, Wadomaya said visa restrictions remain one of the biggest obstacles facing African content creators who travel across countries to produce videos and document stories from the continent.

He noted that the idea of a “Borderless Africa” could become a game changer for creators by making travel and collaboration easier within Africa.

“The issue of visa in Africa is very struggling to go and do a video in different countries,” he said during the panel discussion.

The summit brought together influencers, digital creators, media figures, and technology stakeholders from across Africa to discuss the future of digital communication and Africa’s image on global platforms.

Panel discussions focused on rebranding Africa through digital storytelling, the role of social media creators in shaping narratives, challenges facing content creators, and the responsibility of African governments in creating supportive policies and digital environments.

Participants also discussed how digital platforms can be used to promote African unity, innovation, tourism, and economic cooperation.

The summit is being held under the theme: “Our Shared Vision, Shaping the Digital Future of Africa,” while also promoting the message “Influence for a Better Africa.”

ASMIS 2026 continues in Addis Ababa with additional discussions expected on digital policy, creator economy opportunities, and cross border collaboration among African influencers.

He further emphasized the need for Africa’s positive stories to take center stage, noting that inspiring narratives are essential to driving progress, countering negative perceptions, and fostering transformation across the continent. He described African content creators as the authentic voices shaping the continent’s image on the global stage.
