Muslim residents protest in Mekelle over hijab ban in Axum schools
Hundreds of Muslim residents in Mekelle, Tigray’s capital, protested today against a school policy in Axum that bars female students from wearing hijabs, calling it a violation of religious freedom.
Demonstrators marched under the slogan, “She will wear her hijab, and she will go to school,”
The protest, organized by the Tigray islamic affairs council, followed an incident last month when Muslim female students in Axum School were denied entry for wearing hijab.
According to the supreme council the schools have prevented 159 Muslim students from entering due to their religious attire.
“The decision not only denies our daughters education but also discriminates against their faith,” said one protester
The Tigray Islamic Affairs Council has been in talks with regional and local officials and has also appealed to the courts to reverse the ban.
On 14 January Axum city district court suspended the directive prohibiting female Muslim students from wearing hijabs in schools.
However, the restriction remains in place, sparking anger among the Muslim community.
