Ethiopia Prepares for Seventh National General Election as Millions Expected to Vote
Ethiopia is scheduled to hold its seventh National General Election on June 1, 2026, a vote that election authorities and government institutions describe as an important stage in the country’s democratic development.

According to information released by the Afar Regional Communication Bureau, a total of 54,057,871 voters have registered to participate in the election nationwide. The contest will involve 42 political parties, with 10,438 party-affiliated candidates and 80 independent candidates competing for seats at various levels of government.
The election comes as Ethiopia continues efforts to strengthen democratic institutions amid ongoing political, economic, and security challenges in different parts of the country. Electoral authorities have emphasized voter participation, transparency, and peaceful conduct throughout the process.

Officials reported that political parties were provided opportunities to present their policy agendas through 19 public debate forums conducted in five languages, including Afaraf. The debates were organized as part of broader voter education and public engagement initiatives ahead of polling day.
To monitor the voting process, political parties have deployed more than 250,000 representatives across the country. In addition, 1,562 domestic observers drawn from 55 civic organizations are expected to oversee various aspects of the election.
International observer missions have also arrived in Ethiopia. The African Union has deployed a 59 member election observation mission led by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta. The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has likewise fielded a 26 member observer delegation to monitor the electoral process.
In the Afar Region, authorities say election materials have been distributed to 32 designated locations, with preparations completed ahead of polling day. Regional officials stated that logistical arrangements were finalized to ensure voting can proceed as scheduled.

The Afar Regional Communication Bureau called on eligible voters to participate peacefully and responsibly in the election. The bureau urged citizens to exercise their voting rights while avoiding activities that could disrupt the electoral process.
Officials further emphasized the importance of maintaining ballot secrecy, transparency, and public confidence in the conduct of the election. They also called upon election administrators, political parties, observers, security institutions, and voters to fulfill their respective responsibilities in accordance with electoral laws and procedures.
The outcome of the election is expected to shape Ethiopia’s political landscape and governance priorities in the coming years. Polling stations across the country are scheduled to open on June 1, with domestic and international observers monitoring the process.
