Addis Ababa Mayor Says Over 230,000 Residents Receive Meals Ahead of Easter

Addis Ababa, 9 April 2026፡(HNH)

Addis Ababa City Administration has provided meals to more than 230,000 residents ahead of the upcoming Easter holiday, according to Mayor Adanech Abiebie.

In a message shared on her official social media page, the mayor said the initiative targeted residents facing social and economic challenges, including persons with disabilities, elderly citizens, individuals without family support, and low income government employees.

The mayor stated that the meal distribution was conducted at the city’s central administration offices and expanded to all sub cities and woredas across Addis Ababa.

Beyond the meal program, the city administration also allocated additional budget to ensure the availability of essential goods at affordable prices during the holiday period. According to the mayor, the measure is intended to ease temporary cost of living pressures linked to global developments, including tensions in the Middle East and fuel supply constraints, while helping stabilize local markets.

The mayor noted that the initiative is part of a broader people centered policy direction pursued under the ongoing national reform agenda. She added that the administration aims to ensure inclusive development and improve living standards across all income groups in the capital.

Holiday related support for vulnerable residents has increasingly become a regular practice in Addis Ababa and other major cities in recent years, particularly under the current reform oriented leadership. Officials say such initiatives are designed to strengthen social solidarity during major religious and national holidays.

The mayor’s office also highlighted the growing role of private sector investors, religious institutions, and individual donors in supporting the initiative. Several contributors were acknowledged for their financial support, including Jospong Integrated Waste Management PLC Trading, which donated 15 million birr, Midrock Investment Group CEO Jemal Ahmed with 10 million birr, Ethiopian Full Gospel Believers Church with 7 million birr, Belayneh Kinde Group with 5 million birr, athlete Yohannes Bifa with 2.9 million birr, and Tekabe Mulu with 500,000 birr.

Mayor Adanech expressed appreciation to donors, volunteers, and stakeholders who participated in the effort, and extended Easter wishes to residents while encouraging continued support for vulnerable communities.

City officials say similar assistance programs are expected to continue during major holidays as part of ongoing efforts to promote inclusive urban development and social welfare.
