Ethiopia Extends Tigray Interim Administration Term by One Year

Addis Ababa, April 8, 2026

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has extended the mandate of Lieutenant General Tadesse Worede as President of the Tigray Interim Administration for an additional year, effective from April 9, 2026, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The decision follows a meeting held in Addis Ababa on Tuesday between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Lt. Gen. Tadesse, during which the interim president presented his annual performance report. The Office of the Prime Minister said the extension was made in accordance with Article 62(9) of the FDRE Constitution, Article 14(2)(b) of Proclamation No. 359/1995, and Regulation No. 479/2013 governing the establishment of the Inclusive Interim Administration of the Tigray Region.

Lt. Gen. Tadesse was first appointed on April 8, 2025, replacing Getachew Reda following the expiration of his mandate. At the time of his appointment, the federal government said Tadesse was suited to lead the region during a critical transition period given his military background and familiarity with conditions in Tigray.

His mandate included facilitating the return of internally displaced persons, overseeing the demobilization, disarmament, reintegration and rehabilitation of former combatants in line with the Pretoria peace agreement, restoring rule of law, and preparing the region for democratic elections. He was also tasked with creating conditions for Tigray’s participation in the Ethiopian national dialogue and addressing actions considered inconsistent with constitutional and legal frameworks.

However, several of these responsibilities remain only partially implemented, amid continued political disagreements and stalled engagement between federal authorities and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Analysts say the extension is intended to maintain administrative continuity and preserve a communication channel between Addis Ababa and authorities in Tigray while broader political arrangements remain unresolved.

The continuation of Lt. Gen. Tadesse’s leadership is also viewed as significant as he remains a key intermediary at a time when direct talks between the federal government and TPLF leaders have slowed in recent months.

This announcement comes as the TPLF has been calling for the reinstatement of the pre war regional administration led by Debretsion Gebremichael, as well as recognition of the government formed following the regional election held in Tigray prior to the two year conflict, a position that has not been accommodated under the Pretoria peace agreement.
