Addis Ababa-April 4/2026

Addis Ababa City Mayor Adanech Abiebie has described the newly inaugurated Addis Sports Park as far more than a physical transformation of the capital, calling it a powerful symbol of the city’s resilience, development, and future prosperity.

In a message issued following the official opening of the first-of-its-kind sports facility, the Mayor said the project represents a major step toward building the Addis Ababa of tomorrow a city shaped by sports, health, and a stronger future generation.

According to Mayor, the park is a unique public asset that brings living honor to Ethiopia’s heroic athletes, hope to the youth, and joy to children.

She noted that the park features commemorative statues of 15 legendary Ethiopian Olympic gold medalists, describing the tribute as a lasting and visible recognition of the nation’s sporting heroes. The Mayor added that the statues are also intended to inspire younger generations, sending a powerful message that “It is possible.”

The Mayor further highlighted that the park includes Olympic-standard sports facilities designed for both professional athletes and aspiring youth, including sports fields, swimming pools, and an 800-meter running track. For children, the park also offers modern and traditional playgrounds thoughtfully developed to support their physical and mental growth.

Mayor Adanech emphasized that the project also reflects the city’s broader vision of linking sports with social and economic inclusion. She added that the park’s modern parking facilities, spacious public plaza, and restaurants make it an attractive and convenient destination for residents and visitors alike.

She further stated that the green recreational area developed alongside the riverside development project stands as practical evidence of Addis Ababa’s ongoing corridor development initiative, which seeks to make the city greener, more livable, and more welcoming for its residents.

The Mayor reaffirmed that the effort to make Addis Ababa as beautiful as its name suggests will continue with renewed momentum.
