Ethiopia reports 309 licensed media outlets operating nationwide

Ethiopia’s media sector continues to expand, with 309 media outlets currently licensed and registered by the Ethiopian Media Authority, according to a statement issued by the Authority.
The licensed outlets include 175 broadcast media, 20 print media, 73 internet based media, five paid internet broadcast media, one free internet broadcast media, and 35 foreign media correspondents. Of the total, 254 outlets are currently on air or fully operational, while 55 remain in the preparation phase.
The Ethiopian Media Authority reported that over the past six months it has provided licensing, renewal, monitoring, and professional competency certification services to 39 media institutions.
According to the Authority, recent legal and procedural reforms aimed at streamlining regulation and encouraging sector growth have contributed to a steady rise in the number, diversity, and reach of media outlets across the country. These reforms are intended to improve accessibility and create a more enabling environment for media operations.
The Authority noted that the expansion of the media sector has had a positive impact on public access to information and the promotion of professional journalism standards. It cited ongoing capacity building efforts, including professional training programs delivered through the Ethiopian Media Development Center, as part of broader efforts to strengthen journalistic competence.
Under the Media Proclamation and other relevant national laws, the Ethiopian Media Authority is responsible for regulating broadcasting services, including the issuance, renewal, suspension, and revocation of media licenses.
