Southern Tigray Administrator Calls for Dialogue and Peace During Timket Celebrations in Maychew

By Chekole Alemu

Southern Tigray Administrator Zinabu Gebremedhin has called for dialogue and peaceful engagement, saying there is no justification for a return to armed struggle and that differences must be resolved through discussion and negotiation.

He made the remarks during Timket celebrations in Raya Maychew, where millions of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians across Tigray observed the Epiphany marking the baptism of Jesus Christ. The festival was celebrated with vibrant religious processions, sacred chants, and traditional water blessings.

Timket is observed nationwide by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and is recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, reflecting its deep cultural and spiritual significance.

Zinabu Gebremedhin said the Timket festival serves as an important occasion for strengthening mutual understanding and social cohesion among communities. He emphasized that lasting peace and development require a shared vision and collective commitment.

“Our differences should be resolved around the table through dialogue,” he said, reiterating that there is no reason to return to conflict.

Maychew City Mayor Getachew Assegid also described Timket as a symbol of peace and mutual respect. He called on the public to support one another and work together to safeguard shared interests.

The mayor further stressed that peace is a common asset belonging to all citizens and that protecting it is a shared responsibility.

The statements reflect ongoing efforts by local authorities to promote reconciliation, stability, and social unity in Southern Tigray.
