Mayor Adanech Calls for Global Promotion of Timket’s Cultural Significance

Addis Ababa City Administration Mayor Adanech Abiebie has called for strengthened preservation efforts and greater global recognition of Timket, highlighting its importance as both a religious and cultural heritage.
Speaking to followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church gathered at Jan Meda during the Timket celebrations, the mayor said the festival holds deep spiritual and social value. Timket commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ and is widely observed across the country with public ceremonies and religious rituals.
Mayor Adanech said the celebration serves as a symbol of peace, unity, and renewal, encouraging values of forgiveness and social harmony. She urged participants to use the occasion to promote mutual respect and to reject hatred and division.
She also noted that Timket, which is registered by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, plays an important role in connecting communities and presenting Ethiopia’s cultural identity to the world. According to the mayor, the festival functions as both a religious observance and a social bridge that brings people together across generations.
The mayor added that Timket contributes to the cultural and economic life of Addis Ababa by attracting large numbers of local and international visitors each year. She said the city administration works closely with the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church to prepare and beautify the capital during the festivities.
Concluding her remarks, Mayor Adanech extended her greetings to the Christian faithful gathered at Jan Meda and encouraged them to serve as ambassadors of Ethiopia’s religious and cultural values, reinforcing the country’s image on the global stage.
