Tigray Interim President Addresses Humanitarian Crisis in Hitsats and Current Political Developments
Tigray,Mekelle፡December 23, 2025
The President of the Tigray Interim Administration, Tadesse Werede, held a press briefing today to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region, particularly focusing on the dire situation at the Hitsats IDP camp. He also provided an update on the current political developments affecting Tigray.
During the press conference, Tadesse highlighted the worsening conditions faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Tigray, with a specific emphasis on the Hitsats camp, where reports have surfaced of widespread hunger and malnutrition. Images showing severely emaciated children and elderly individuals at the camp have drawn significant attention both locally and internationally, prompting increased calls for humanitarian assistance.

Tadesse called on both Ethiopian and Eritrean citizens, particularly youth, to intensify their support for displaced communities, warning that hunger and deprivation continue to pose a severe threat to lives across more than 145 displacement sites in the region. He urged the public to contribute to relief efforts through various fundraising and aid initiatives, many of which have gained traction on social media platforms.
The President also appealed to the Ethiopian Federal Government and regional administrations to treat the crisis as a national emergency. He underscored that addressing the needs of displaced persons is both a legal and moral obligation. Tadesse called for urgent resource mobilization and improved coordination at all levels of government to provide immediate relief and prevent further loss of life.
In addition to addressing the immediate humanitarian concerns, Tadesse emphasized the need for a long-term political and humanitarian solution. He noted that emergency assistance alone would not be enough to resolve the crisis, stressing the importance of ensuring the safe and dignified return of displaced individuals to their homes, along with reintegration and rehabilitation efforts.
Turning to the political landscape, Tadesse touched upon the current political situation in Tigray. While details on specific political matters were limited, he alluded to the complexities surrounding the post-war reconstruction and governance of the region. He reiterated the importance of continued cooperation between local and federal authorities to restore stability and peace.

Tadesse’s remarks come at a critical time as the humanitarian situation in Tigray remains precarious. International aid organizations, as well as local actors, have called for more coordinated efforts to address the needs of those affected by displacement and ongoing instability.
In conclusion, President Tadesse Werede commended the efforts of social media influencers, particularly TikTokers, for their role in exposing the dire hunger situation at the Hitsats IDP camp and for mobilizing vital resources. He praised the swift response from digital platforms, acknowledging the significant impact of their fundraising campaigns in providing life-saving aid to those affected by the crisis.

Tadesse emphasized that the collective efforts of the public, both online and offline, are critical in addressing the ongoing humanitarian needs in Tigray and called for continued collaboration to ensure that displaced communities receive the support they desperately require.
