Dr. Akeza Presents Research on War-Related Civilian Injuries and the Collapse of Tigray’s Health System

Dr. Akeza Auwalom, a medical researcher at Mekelle University, delivered a detailed academic presentation on the state of health care in war-affected Tigray, drawing attention to the scale of civilian injuries and the destruction of medical infrastructure during the conflict.

The presentation, titled “Prevalence, Causes and Outcomes of War-Related Civilian Injuries in Ethiopia’s War-Torn Tigray Region: A Community-Based Descriptive Study,” examined the extent of injuries sustained by civilians, their underlying causes, and the long-term physical and social consequences. The research also outlined gaps in medical services caused by the collapse of health facilities, shortages of trained personnel, and the breakdown of essential supply chains.

According to the findings, many health centers across Tigray were rendered nonfunctional during the war, limiting access to emergency care and basic medical treatment. The study highlights how these disruptions contributed to preventable deaths, untreated injuries, and prolonged suffering among affected communities.

Dr. Akeza also presented the broader implications of the crisis at the University of Toronto, where he discussed the destruction of Tigray’s health-care system and the urgent need for reconstruction, investment in public health, and long-term support for survivors.

Observers described the presentation as well-organized, data-driven, and deeply informative, offering a rare community-based perspective on one of the most under-documented humanitarian crises in recent years.
