Prime Minister Commends Jigjiga’s Urban Growth

Jigjiga, Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has praised the pace of urban development in Jigjiga, describing the city as a model of transformation in Eastern Ethiopia.

In a video message released on social media, the Prime Minister highlighted a series of infrastructure projects that have reshaped the city in recent years. These include the construction of approximately 60 kilometers of roads, 10 kilometers of pedestrian walkways, and 10 kilometers of bicycle lanes. Thousands of new housing units have also been built, while the city’s electrification capacity has reportedly increased fourfold, according to updates shared by the Somali Regional State administration.

Abiy noted that the city’s ongoing corridor development project is generating employment opportunities, supporting tourism, and enhancing the standard of living for residents.

Placing Jigjiga’s progress within a wider national context, the Prime Minister drew attention to Ethiopia’s accelerating urbanization. He stated that projections suggest a majority of the country’s population could become urban residents within the next 14 to 15 years.

While recognizing this growth as an opportunity, Abiy also emphasized the need for careful urban planning. “Urbanization without sufficient space and facilities cannot represent civilization,” he said, underscoring the importance of sustainable development to ensure livable cities for future generations.
