The United Arab Emirates has condemned what it described as recent attacks by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and an armed alliance it said the group has joined against Ethiopian federal forces.
In a statement, the UAE also expressed concern over the reported seizure of airports in the Tigray region and military escalation in the neighboring Afar and Amhara regions.
The UAE said the developments pose a threat to Ethiopia’s unity, sovereignty and stability.
Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of State, expressed the UAE’s support for the Ethiopian government and people, while rejecting attempts to alter Ethiopia’s constitutional order through force or armed action.
The UAE reiterated its support for Ethiopia’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, security and stability.
Sheikh Shakhboot called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de escalation of tensions. He also stressed the importance of protecting civilians, preventing further violence and adhering to the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
The UAE said dialogue and peaceful means should be prioritized to resolve the conflict and reaffirmed its support for efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in Ethiopia.
The statement also warned against further escalation that could affect security and stability in the wider Horn of Africa.
