IGAD Permanent Representative Meets UN Peacebuilding Chief to Discuss Regional Cooperation

YORK — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Cherinet Hariffo, held talks with United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, at the UN Headquarters in New York, focusing on strengthening cooperation between the regional bloc and the United Nations.

According to information shared following the meeting, the discussions centered on reinforcing the longstanding partnership between IGAD and the United Nations, with particular emphasis on advancing regional peace, conflict prevention, and peacebuilding initiatives across the Horn of Africa.

The two officials also exchanged views on the evolving geopolitical situation in the region and reviewed ongoing collaborative efforts in Somalia, Sudan, and Ethiopia. The discussions explored opportunities to enhance coordination in addressing regional security challenges and supporting sustainable peace efforts.

Cherinet said the meeting examined new avenues for cooperation aimed at promoting regional stability and strengthening conflict prevention mechanisms. He noted that combining IGAD’s regional expertise with the United Nations’ global reach could help build more resilient frameworks for sustainable peace and security.

The meeting reflects ongoing engagement between IGAD and the United Nations as both organizations seek to deepen collaboration in addressing political, security, and peacebuilding priorities across the Horn of Africa.
