The 19th Ethiopian Half Marathon Competition has officially begun in Addis Ababa, with hundreds of athletes taking part in one of the country’s major long-distance road racing events.

A total of 638 runners are competing this year, including 455 men and 183 women, according to event organizers. The race has drawn participants from different parts of the country, highlighting Ethiopia’s strong tradition in long-distance running.

The competition started and is expected to finish at Meskel Square, a central landmark in the capital often used for large public sporting and national events. Roads along the race route were temporarily closed to accommodate the event, with security and traffic management teams deployed to ensure smooth operations.

The Ethiopian Half Marathon is considered one of the key fixtures in the national athletics calendar, serving both as a competitive platform for elite runners and an opportunity for emerging athletes to gain visibility.

Winners of the race are expected to be announced later in the day after the final runners cross the finish line at Meskel Square.
