A drone strike reported near Sheraro in Tigray has fueled controversy and renewed scrutiny over allegations that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is preparing to deploy fighters to Sudan under an arrangement with Sudanese military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
Claims circulating on social media and among local sources alleged that the TPLF recently reached an agreement with Sudan’s military authorities to send combatants to participate in operations against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). According to the claims, fighters would receive monthly payments while the TPLF leadership would receive financial compensation under the arrangement.
The allegations remain unverified, and neither Sudanese authorities nor TPLF officials have publicly commented on the reports.
Meanwhile, a fact-checking group known as “Fact-Mermari” reported that a drone strike occurred at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Friday near the Molgi River bridge along the Sheraro-Adi Hageray road. According to the group, the area was struck multiple times, triggering secondary explosions after ammunition stored at the site was reportedly hit.
The investigation claims the strike targeted elements of Army 13, specifically the Birakhe and Tsin’at divisions. Sources cited by the group alleged that military vehicles carrying armed personnel had moved from areas west of Sheraro before the attack occurred.
Reports indicate that casualties were significant, with numerous wounded fighters transferred to Sheraro Hospital for treatment. However, no official casualty figures have been released.
Fact-Mermari stated that, based on information gathered so far, there is no evidence that civilians were killed or injured in the strike. The group said it continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
The incident has intensified speculation surrounding the alleged deployment of TPLF fighters beyond Ethiopia’s borders. However, independent verification of the claims linking the drone strike to a Sudan-related deployment operation remains unavailable.
Ethiopian Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the reported strike or the broader allegations concerning fighter recruitment and deployment to Sudan.
