Dr. Abraham Belay has issued a strongly worded public message calling on the people of Tigray, particularly intellectuals, elders, youth, religious leaders, and political figures, to speak out against what he described as the region’s ongoing political decline and destructive leadership failures.

In a statement titled “Breaking the Silence: A Call to Save Tigray from the Path of Destruction,” Dr. Abraham warned that continued silence from influential members of society could deepen the crisis facing the region.

“Enough is enough,” he wrote repeatedly throughout the statement, urging Tigrayans to rise against division, political paralysis, and continued suffering.

Dr. Abraham described Tigray as a society rich in civilization, culture, faith, and history, but said it has been pushed into severe decline by what he called the actions of a small group of individuals. He questioned how a people known for valuing ideas and intellectual debate had reached what he termed a dangerous political condition.

He also raised broader questions about accountability, public silence, and societal responsibility, asking why some people supported the current trajectory while others remained silent.

“When a society, especially its scholars, elites, elders, religious leaders, and politicians, fails to reach consensus on the root causes of its crisis, it becomes vulnerable to deeper collapse,” the statement said.

The message placed particular emphasis on the role of silence among educated and influential figures in society. Referring to an article by a Tigrayan scholar named Meuz titled “By the Noise of the Ignorant, by the Silence of the Wise,” Dr. Abraham argued that remaining silent during times of crisis amounts to complicity.

He called on Tigray’s youth, mothers, and armed groups to learn from past mistakes and prioritize peace, truth, and collective survival over personal or political interests.

The statement also warned against internal divisions, labeling politics, and what he described as whispered conspiracies, saying such dynamics continue to deepen public suffering and displacement.

Dr. Abraham concluded his message with an appeal for unity and urgent action, urging Tigrayans to “wake up before we are destroyed” and to work toward reconciliation, accountability, and a better future for the younger generation.

The statement comes at a time of continued political tension and uncertainty in Tigray, where debates over governance, security, reconstruction, and political leadership remain highly sensitive and deeply contested.
