Ethiopian Embassy Urges Urgent Action After Killings of Nationals in South Africa

The Ethiopian Embassy in Pretoria has called on the government of South Africa to take immediate action following a series of killings targeting Ethiopian nationals.

In a statement issued on April 30, the embassy urged South African authorities to intervene swiftly and strengthen security measures in areas where the incidents have been reported. The appeal comes after recent attacks in Johannesburg, where at least three Ethiopians were shot dead. The incidents are believed to be linked to a rise in xenophobic violence.

The embassy expressed concern over what it described as ongoing killings and injustices against Ethiopian nationals. It also indicated that four Ethiopians have been killed within a short period, raising alarm within the community.

Ethiopian officials have formally requested South African security institutions to conduct urgent investigations, bring those responsible to justice, and publicly disclose the findings as soon as possible.

The statement further highlighted growing anti-foreigner sentiment in parts of South Africa, particularly affecting African migrant communities.

Ethiopians living in the country have been advised to remain vigilant, cooperate with other migrant communities, and take precautions to protect themselves and their property.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia expressed condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed its expectation that South African authorities will take necessary measures to address the situation and ensure accountability.
