U.S. Engagement in Gambella Highlights Peace, Humanitarian Access, and Economic Prospects

Ervin Massinga held high level discussions in Gambella Region on Wednesday, meeting with Regional President Alemitu Umod and senior regional officials to explore pathways toward stability, humanitarian access, and long term economic development.
The visit comes at a time when Gambella continues to face complex challenges shaped by intercommunal tensions, refugee inflows from neighboring South Sudan, and the broader humanitarian pressures affecting western Ethiopia. The discussions focused on promoting intercommunal harmony, strengthening the role of religious institutions in peace building, and ensuring humanitarian organizations can operate without restrictions to deliver life saving assistance.
Focus on Peace and Intercommunal Harmony
Officials from both sides emphasized the importance of community based peace building initiatives in Gambella, a region known for its ethnic diversity and historical tensions. Religious institutions were highlighted as critical actors capable of bridging divisions and fostering reconciliation at the grassroots level.

During his visit, Ambassador Massinga also traveled to Jewi Refugee Camp, one of the largest refugee camps hosting individuals fleeing violence and instability in South Sudan.
At the camp, the Ambassador expressed appreciation to the Ethiopia government for maintaining an open asylum policy and continuing to host refugees despite domestic economic pressures. Ethiopia remains one of Africa’s largest refugee hosting countries, sheltering hundreds of thousands of displaced persons from neighboring states.
He also acknowledged the work of humanitarian agencies providing essential services including food assistance, healthcare, shelter, and education. These efforts are largely supported by humanitarian funding from the United States, reflecting what officials described as continued support from the American people to vulnerable communities in Ethiopia.
The United States has historically been one of the largest humanitarian donors to Ethiopia, funding emergency food aid, refugee protection, health services, and resilience programs. The Ambassador’s visit underscored that American humanitarian assistance remains focused on life saving support, particularly in regions affected by displacement and conflict.
