Dr. Selamawit: The Journey Behind a Smile- Entrepreneurship, Influence, and Life’s Lessons
By Chekole Alemu
Dr. Selamawit Moges, widely known as Selamina Mo, is the founder and owner of Smile Dental Clinic, a private dental institution that has become one of Addis Ababa’s most recognized names in healthcare.

In just five years, she has built a practice employing over 100 staff members, blending modern dentistry with a vision for social impact, and demonstrating how ambition, discipline, and strategic thinking can intersect in meaningful ways.
Raised in Addis Ababa without her father, Dr. Selamawit grew up in an environment that demanded self-reliance. Friends and colleagues describe her as a young woman shaped by persistence and focus. Her drive propelled her through rigorous training in dentistry and into private practice.
Today, Smile Dental Clinic stands as a reflection of that journey: a facility that combines cutting-edge equipment, meticulous hygiene standards, and a contemporary design that signals both professionalism and care.
Her influence extends far beyond the clinic’s walls. Dr. Selamawit has leveraged social media, particularly TikTok, as a platform not only for visibility but for education and outreach. Her personal account has grown to over 400,000 followers, while the clinic recently surpassed one million followers in a highly publicized 48-hour challenge orchestrated with popular TikToker and influencer Adonay.
The challenge promised that if the target was reached, the clinic would gift a car to singer Gebre Yohannes. The milestone was achieved before the deadline, turning a digital campaign into a tangible act of generosity and highlighting how social media can create community engagement around health and entrepreneurship.
Yet behind the public persona and visible success lies a deeply human story. In an interview on EBS with host Lula Bezu, Dr. Selamawit reflected on a personal regret that continues to shape her perspective. During the years of relentless work to build her clinic, she admitted, she did not spend enough time with her mother, who later passed away.
The loss left a profound mark. “Life is too short,” she said. “You have to do things in their time.” That insight, born from grief, underscores the deeper human lesson behind her visible achievements: no professional milestone can replace the moments we postpone with the people we love.

Her story is also one of giving back. Through her work with Macedonia Humanitarian Association, she has established a free dental unit for residents, funding equipment and dedicating her time and that of her staff to providing care. According to the charity’s leadership, this intervention has transformed lives restoring smiles, confidence, nutrition, and overall wellbeing. In doing so, Dr. Selamawit has demonstrated that success can be measured not only in followers, staff, or revenue but in the lives positively touched along the way.
Her blend of professional ambition, digital influence, and philanthropy marks her as part of a new generation of Ethiopian leaders navigating modern challenges. While some critics note the merging of healthcare with influencer culture raises questions about commercialization, her journey reflects a larger truth: influence, when paired with skill and intention, can become a force for tangible change.
Ultimately, Dr. Selamawit’s story is more than a tale of rapid growth or social media milestones. It is a story of discipline, vision, and the profound lessons life demands. The million followers, the high-profile gestures, and the clinical achievements are only the visible edges of a narrative rooted in resilience, empathy, and a constant reminder that time is finite.
In balancing ambition with awareness of what truly matters, she offers a quiet but powerful message: success carries weight, but it gains meaning only when paired with care, presence, and the courage to act while there is still time.
