Fedila Biya Abamecha, one of the emerging young leaders within Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party.
By Chekole Alemu
Fedila Biya Abamecha is part of a rising generation of political leaders reshaping the communication landscape of Ethiopia’s ruling party, the Prosperity Party. At just 27, she serves as Head of the Public Relations Bureau at the party’s headquarters and Vice President of its Youth Wing, placing her at the center of national political messaging and youth mobilization.

Born on June 21, 1998, Fedila represents a cohort of young Ethiopians who have grown up in a period of political transition and reform. Her journey, however, began far from the corridors of federal power.
Early Foundations
Raised in a hardworking family as the fourth child among six siblings, Fedila grew up closely attached to her father.

She often describes him as the architect of her confidence. While still a child, she worked alongside him in his woodwork business, learning discipline and responsibility. She also volunteered in his clinic, where she developed a sense of empathy and public service.
Those early experiences shaped her understanding of leadership not as status, but as responsibility. Community elders and local leaders reportedly saw potential in her from a young age, encouraging her father to nurture her talents.

An avid reader, she cultivated a habit of self-education early in life. Books broadened her perspective and sharpened her voice, something that would later define her public career.
A Public Voice Emerges
Fedila’s communication journey began in primary school. By Grade 5, she was writing political poems. Soon after, she was performing on stages in Jimma, Addis Ababa, and Adama, addressing audiences far beyond her age group.
From Grades 6 to 9, she hosted programs on Jimma Community Radio, speaking directly to children and youth. She was active in school clubs, including Mini Media, Art, and Charity associations. These platforms strengthened her public speaking skills and sharpened her political awareness.

During periods of religious and ethnic tension, she used poetry as a tool for unity. In 2009, amid unrest in Bashasha, she wrote a poem calling for interfaith harmony. During election seasons and community fundraising initiatives, she delivered motivational performances encouraging youth participation and development. For many who heard her, she was not simply performing. She was persuading.
Academic and Professional Growth
Fedila graduated from Jimma University in 2020. She later earned a Master of Business Administration from Leadstar College of Management and Leadership in 2024, deepening her knowledge of organizational communication, leadership strategy, governance, and diplomacy.
Her political career advanced steadily. She first led the Women’s Wing in Jimma City before joining the Federal Women’s Wing Central Committee. She then became Head of the Communication Bureau for Jimma Zone. In 2022, following recommendations from senior leaders, she was appointed Head of the Public Relations Bureau at the Prosperity Party headquarters.

A year later, she was named Vice President of the party’s Youth Wing.
Her rise coincided with a period when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized generational renewal within party structures. Fedila’s appointment was widely viewed as part of that broader strategy to elevate young professionals into decision-making roles.
International Exposure and Strategic Training
Beyond domestic politics, Fedila has participated in several international leadership programs. She received strategic communication training with the UAE Presidential Narration Team in 2023.

She also took part in China’s Belt and Road Initiative program in Beijing, Japan’s Ship for World Youth Leaders program in Tokyo, the Sochi Youth Festival in Russia, and the African Media Think Tank in Beijing.
In 2025, she represented Ethiopia in Islamabad, presenting the achievements of the Green Legacy Initiative and highlighting the country’s tree-planting campaign, which has reportedly reached 45 billion seedlings over seven years.

These engagements strengthened her global perspective and positioned her as one of the internationally exposed young communicators within the ruling party.
National Reach and Grassroots Engagement
Fedila has traveled extensively across Ethiopia, from the peaks of Ras Dashen to the scorching Danakil Depression in Afar.

She has made it a personal initiative to promote regional potential and showcase development efforts through her social media platforms.
Her travels are symbolic as well as political. As a young woman operating in a traditionally male-dominated sphere, she often emphasizes that gender should not be a barrier to leadership.

Supporters describe her as approachable and grounded, qualities that contrast with the often rigid image of party officials.
She is known for engaging with diverse communities, embracing local cultures, and highlighting traditional dress and cuisine from different regions. This approach aligns with the Prosperity Party’s message of unity within diversity.

A Symbol of Generational Transition
Fedila Biya’s trajectory reflects a broader transformation within Ethiopia’s political structure. Her career is often cited by party members as evidence that young people can move into influential positions when given institutional support.
There is growing speculation that she could represent her birthplace in the upcoming 7th National Election, though no formal announcement has been made.

Whether as a poet, radio host, youth advocate, or national political communicator, Fedila’s path illustrates how communication has become central to political power. Her story is not only about personal ambition. It mirrors the Prosperity Party’s investment in youth leadership and its effort to redefine who occupies spaces of authority in Ethiopia.
From a father’s workshop in Jimma to the headquarters of the country’s ruling party, Fedila Biya Abamecha stands as a visible face of Ethiopia’s evolving political generation.
