The Ethiopian Embassy in Nairobi commemorated the 130th Anniversary of the Victory of Adwa under the inspiring motto, βGlorious Past, Radiant Horizon.β

The event was graced by the presence of distinguished Guest of Honor, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Musalia Mudavadi. The celebration was attended by Zainab Hawa Bangura, Under-Secretary-General and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Inger Andersen, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), AnaclΓ‘udia Rossbach, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), senior government officials of Republic of Kenya, Ambassadors, the diplomatic corps, defense attaches, and the Ethiopian diaspora community.

The Guest of Honor Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, described Adwa as βa defining moment not only in the history of Ethiopia but in Africa and other world as well.β
Mudavadi extended sincere congratulation, on behalf of President William Ruto, the government and people of the Republic of Kenya, to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the government and people of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

In his address, Ambassador General Bacha Debele emphasized that the Victory of Adwa was not just a military triumph but a powerful declaration of Africa’s resilience against oppression. He highlighted its significance as a beacon of hope for oppressed peoples and its foundational role in Pan-Africanism.

The Ambassador also highlighted Ethiopiaβs βSecond Adwaβ, the successful completion and inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). He described the GERD as a modern symbol of sovereignty, dismantling unfair colonial-era treaties and affirming Ethiopiaβs right to utilize the Nileβs resources for its own development and prosperity.
The celebration featured “KIN -Ethiopia,” where talented Ethiopian artists showcased our rich culture through traditional Ethiopian music and attire.
