Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Somalia leaders inaugurate Shabelle Tourism Project in Jigjiga

By Chekole Alemu

Leaders of Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Somalia gathered on Thursday in Jigjiga, the capital of Ethiopia’s Somali Region, to inaugurate a new development site in the Shabelle area, marking a joint moment of regional engagement and investment.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed welcomed Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Jigjiga, where they attended the official launch of the Shabelle Tourism Project.

The project is designed to support economic growth in the Somali Region and contribute to Ethiopia’s broader tourism sector. Officials say it has the potential to attract a significant number of domestic and international visitors, creating new opportunities for employment and local investment.

The inauguration comes as the Somali Region marks nearly eight years of relative stability, a period that stands in contrast to ongoing unrest in parts of the country. During this time, the region has recorded progress in infrastructure, public services, and economic development.

Jigjiga has seen major upgrades in recent years, including the construction of modern road networks built to international standards. These developments are often cited by regional authorities as part of a wider effort to improve connectivity, encourage private investment, and reposition the Somali Region as an emerging destination for trade and tourism.

The presence of the three leaders highlights the growing emphasis on regional cooperation in development and economic integration across the Horn of Africa.
