Chekole Alemu
Ethiopia and the European Union have held high level discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation in the fields of energy and nuclear development, according to the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission.

Commissioner Sandokan Debebe met with Sofie From Emmesberger, Ambassador of the European Union to Ethiopia, alongside representatives from Finland and France, including Sinikka Antila and Pirjo Liisa Hekkila, Head of Mission and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Finland, and Julien Voituriez, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of France.

The meeting focused on establishing a joint framework for collaboration on Ethiopia’s nuclear programme. Key areas of discussion included experience sharing, the development of regulatory and safety frameworks, nuclear waste management, human resource development, and stakeholder engagement.
Officials from Finland and France highlighted their countries’ long standing experience in the peaceful use of nuclear energy and emphasized the role of international cooperation in supporting Ethiopia’s nuclear development roadmap. They noted that technical expertise, strong regulation, and safety standards would be central to any future collaboration.

According to the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission, the discussions reaffirmed a shared commitment to deepening cooperation with the European Union in order to promote sustainable, safe, and responsible nuclear development in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia has in recent years expressed interest in exploring nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, particularly in areas such as energy diversification, medical applications, and research, while aligning its plans with international safety and nonproliferation standards.
