By Chekole Alemu
The Mekelle City Administration has graduated more than 3,000 women heads of households in the first round of its Developmental Safety Net Program, aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting economic self-reliance.
The graduation ceremony was attended by city officials and program beneficiaries. Officials said the women had previously been living under difficult economic conditions and were enrolled in the program to participate in development-oriented public works and livelihood support activities.

According to the city administration, the beneficiaries were involved in a range of development initiatives carried out in Mekelle, including green urban development, environmental protection, sanitation and city beautification, stone paving, and other labor-intensive public works. Officials noted that the women played a visible role in supporting these projects.
The city administration stated that efforts are underway to help the graduates move to more sustainable sources of income. In coordination with the Mekelle City Office of Trade, Industry, and Manufacturing, the women have been linked to micro and small enterprise opportunities to enable them to start their own businesses and improve their living conditions.

The Mekelle City Administration said it will continue to strengthen its support for the graduates until they achieve lasting improvements in their livelihoods.
Participants who completed the first round of the program expressed appreciation for the opportunity to move away from dependency and engage in productive work. They also called for continued support, including access to workspaces and credit facilities, to help them become self-reliant and create employment opportunities for others.
