Tigray Administration Prioritizes Water Resource Development for Irrigation and Energy

Written by Chekole Alemu

Tigray, Ethiopia – The Interim Administration of Tigray has outlined a new focus on the systematic development of the region’s water resources. The plan aims to harness rivers, surface water, and groundwater for expanded irrigation projects and energy generation.

The announcement was made by President Tadese Werede of the Tigray Interim Administration. He emphasized that developing irrigation capacity is critical for the region’s sustainability and food production. “Irrigation is a matter of survival. There is no alternative to irrigation for income generation, and we must work diligently and sustainably on it,” President Werede stated.

The Tigray Water and Energy Bureau, led by Head Tekalay Gebremedhin, is coordinating the effort. The bureau has prepared a detailed plan in collaboration with other technical bodies. Tekalay confirmed the administration is working with a comprehensive strategy to develop both sectors.

During a presentation of the plan, technical experts advocated for a scientific approach to developing water and irrigation infrastructure. They argued such development is necessary to generate economic benefits and called for the diligent involvement of both governmental and non-governmental institutions.

The broader initiative appears to be part of a long-term strategy to strengthen regional self-reliance and contribute to food and energy security. The administration’s statements frame the development of water resources as a foundational step toward achieving these goals.
