Kenya to Build $3.8 Billion Nuclear Power Plant in Siaya by 2027

Kenya is set to embark on its first-ever nuclear energy project with the construction of a 1,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power plant in Siaya County, scheduled to begin in 2027. The landmark project is projected to cost KSh 500 billion ($3.8 billion) and is seen as a major step toward the nation’s long-term energy security and economic growth.

According to government officials, the plant will initially produce 1,000 MW of electricity, with ambitious expansion plans to scale up to 20,000 MW by 2040. This would make nuclear power a central pillar of Kenya’s energy mix, complementing existing hydro, geothermal, wind, and solar sources.

The initiative is closely aligned with Kenya Vision 2030, the country’s development blueprint aimed at transforming Kenya into a newly industrializing, middle-income nation. Officials say the nuclear project will play a pivotal role in boosting industrial capacity, attracting investment, and meeting the country’s growing power demands.

Energy experts note that the move reflects Kenya’s commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. However, the project will also require rigorous safety, environmental, and regulatory oversight to ensure compliance with international nuclear standards.

If successful, the Siaya plant will position Kenya among the few African nations investing in nuclear energy, alongside South Africa and Egypt.
