Ethiopia will soon begin construction of a massive nuclear plant that will be used for peaceful purposes, comparable to the Renaissance. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed
In a landmark address during today’s inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) announced that Ethiopia will soon embark on nuclear development for peaceful purposes an undertaking he described as comparable in significance to the GERD.

The Prime Minister also unveiled an ambitious national development plan, valued at more than 30 billion USD, designed to transform Ethiopia into a modern industrial and technological power within the next five to six years.
Speaking before a jubilant crowd gathered to celebrate the GERD, Abiy positioned this sweeping strategy as the next defining chapter in Ethiopia’s development journey, a testament to national sovereignty and collective capability.
“The GERD has shown the world what Ethiopia can achieve through its own resolve and resources,” Abiy declared. “This new plan builds on that momentum to fuel our nation’s growth and create a success story for the entire African continent.”
The comprehensive plan spans critical sectors, including energy sovereignty, industrial expansion, aviation, manufacturing, and housing & urban development. Alongside the nuclear initiative, Abiy confirmed that construction of Ethiopia’s largest African airline hub will soon begin, while a gas plant will be inaugurated in the coming weeks—on the same day that construction of a second, ten-times larger gas facility commences.
He further announced that Ethiopia’s long-standing demand for petroleum refining will soon be met through the establishment of a refinery plant, while the recently signed cement factory project will also move forward to reinforce the country’s construction and infrastructure ambitions.
The nuclear development program builds on Ethiopia’s 2021 agreement with Russia to establish a Center for Nuclear Science and Technology, underscoring the country’s commitment to peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
Concluding his address, Abiy invited Ethiopians everywhere to see the GERD firsthand, calling it both a monument of unity and a foundation for the nation’s future:
“I invite every Ethiopian to visit the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. See the symbol of our unity and the foundation upon which we will build this new future.”
