At a time when the international political system is rapidly changing from day to day with unipolar dominance coming to an end and transitioning toward a multipolar system Ethiopia has been pursuing a new and modern Medemer (synergy) diplomacy since the dawn of the national reform. How much do you know about Medemer diplomacy?
Let me tell you a little today! This new foreign relations and diplomatic perspective of Medemer is a comprehensive and balanced framework aimed at achieving the country’s sustainable supremacy and national dignity, going far beyond mere survival within the fast-paced cycle of global change.
Prior to the reform, Ethiopia’s foreign policy primarily stemmed from internal vulnerability, viewing the world through the lens of suspicion, anxiety, and conspiracy, heavily leaning toward Realism.
The new Medemer diplomacy, however, has altered this rigid stance, bringing a progressive vision that breaks free from ideological imprisonment and mental stagnation.
The Medemer vision reconciles Realism and Liberalism, promoting a foreign relations philosophy that maintains a balance between competition and cooperation.

It believes that countries should focus on cooperation rather than just competition in their foreign relations, growing together by filling the void of isolation created by structural imbalances.
Instead of being bound by polarized conclusions, this approach grants the country a great capacity to be adaptable and flexible to changing international dynamics.
While the distinguishing features of Medemer diplomacy are multifaceted, its primary characteristic is that it does not treat national interest as a static, pre-determined, and finalized concept. It accepts that national interest is developed through value-based rational dialogue, mutual understanding, and by centering the dignity of citizens.
Key Features of Medemer Diplomacy:
Multiplying Friends and Enhancing Partnerships: The new diplomacy refrains from labeling countries whether near or far as permanent adversaries or enemies. Instead, it aims to multiply partners, prioritize the renewal of relations to resolve issues, and create cooperation focused on mutual benefit.
Priority for Good Neighborliness and Regional Integration: By dispelling the clouds of suspicion among countries in the region, it has brought a vision that enables Ethiopia to be an examplar of democracy, peace, and rapid growth for the region. It strives to realize regional integration by expanding energy, trade, and infrastructure connectivity.

A New Economic and Citizen-Centric Diplomacy: It shifts diplomacy away from the vicious cycle of dependency on aid and loans, focusing instead on attracting sustainable foreign direct investment, seeking markets, and achieving holistic prosperity.
Furthermore, by being citizen-centric, it has created a wide landscape to protect the rights and safety of citizens living abroad and ensure their active participation in the country’s economic and social development. It is this very diplomatic principle that works to achieve the quest for sea access through a give-and-take principle in a peaceful and legal manner.

In general, the new Medemer diplomacy is steering Ethiopia out of yesterday’s cycle of internal vulnerability, anchoring it in a modern visionary framework that links today with tomorrow, suits changing global conditions, and elevates our national dignity and sovereignty to greater heights.
This clear diplomacy, which turns liabilities into rewards and relations into mutual benefits, is what is making Ethiopia an influential, respected, and anchor country for shared prosperity both in the Horn of Africa and on the international stage.
