The foundation stone for the development will be laid at the end of August in a high-profile ceremony, with senior leaders from both the Tigray regional government and the federal government expected to attend.
Designed to accommodate more than 8,000 households, the project aims to ease the severe housing shortages in Mekelle, while also stimulating the local economy. Thousands of young people are expected to gain jobs during the construction and operational phases.
The announcement was made during the closing day of the Ashenda festival at Northern Hotel, where Zer’u Gebre-Libanos entrepreneur, philanthropist, and increasingly a cultural icon was warmly received by the public.
Zer’u, founder and CEO of the Zeru Business Group, oversees a conglomerate with investments that span commodities, import/export, agriculture, industry, manufacturing, real estate, and hospitality. His company operates not only in Tigray and across Ethiopia, but also extends its influence into Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the United States.
The new housing project is being hailed as one of the largest private sector initiatives in the city’s history, underscoring Zer’u’s dual legacy as both a business leader and a benefactor committed to improving the lives of communities.
