World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has congratulated Ethiopians on the historic inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), calling it a “groundbreaking milestone” in the country’s development journey.

In a heartfelt message, Dr. Tedros said he was proud to be part of the generation that witnessed the long-awaited completion of Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam.

He paid special tribute to the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, praising his vision and courage to initiate the project in 2011 despite heavy political and financial challenges. Dr. Tedros also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for seeing the project through to completion, emphasizing that GERD is a testament to Ethiopia’s resilience and unity.

“Congratulations to all fellow Ethiopians on the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam! We remember the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi for his vision and courage to start the project, and thank Prime Minister Abiy for completing it,” he wrote.

The inauguration of GERD marks a defining chapter in Ethiopia’s modern history, promising to provide power to millions, boost industrialization, and strengthen the country’s sovereignty over its natural resources.
