Coalition of Eight Humanitarian and Rights Organizations Press for Urgent Implementation of Pretoria Peace Agreement Following the Death of Two-Year-Old Naod in Mekelle IDPs’ Camp
MEKELLE, September 25, 2025 (Horn News Hub) – A coalition of eight humanitarian and rights organizations including Voice for Democracy and Social Justice, Human Rights First, Solidarity of Tigrians for Independence and Liberty, Seret Civil Society Organization, Gorzo – A Movement to Empower Women, Yikhono: A Movement to End Gender Based Violence, Umbrella for the Needy, and Ethio-Tracing Missing Persons, have issued a joint statement urging the immediate implementation of Pretoria Peace Agreement, following the death of a two-year-old boy fatally attacked by a hyena at Mekelle Sebea Kare Internally Displaced Persons camp.
The coalition express “deep sorrow and outrage,” noting that the tragedy shows the intolerable conditions faced by over 760,000 displaced people in Tigray, who continue to live in overcrowded shelters with limited protection, food, and health services.
“This tragedy is not an isolated incident, but a stark reminder of the intolarable conditions in which hundreds of thousands of displaced people continue to live across Tigray,” the statement reads.
The organizations stresses that the continued suffering of civilians is a direct consequence of the stalled implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement, signed to restore peace and enable safe return for displaced communities.
The coaltion calls on all parties and the international community to urgently implement the agreement in good faith, ensure displaced populations have dignified and secure living conditions, guarantee sustained humanitarian access, and prioritize accountability and justice for survivors of the war on Tigray.
“The death of a child in an IDP camp should never be acceptable. The people of Tigray cannot wait any longer. Implementation of the Pretoria Agreement is not only a legal obligation; it is a moral imperative,” the statement concludes.
