TPLF Accuses Ethiopian Government of Failing to Implement Pretoria Agreement, Calls for International Intervention

Mekelle, September 2025- The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has issued a statement urging the international community to intervene in what it describes as a worsening humanitarian crisis in Tigray. The group accused the Ethiopian government of failing to uphold key provisions of the Pretoria Agreement, signed nearly three years ago, which pledged peace, the withdrawal of occupying forces, and the return of displaced persons.

According to the statement, conditions in camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) remain dire, with shortages of food, medicine, shelter, and security. The TPLF highlighted a recent incident in Mekelle in which a one-year-old child was reportedly killed by a hyena in an IDP camp, describing it as emblematic of the desperation faced by displaced families.

The group alleged that “hundreds of thousands” of people have died in recent years due to hunger, disease, and lack of protection in displacement camps, characterizing the situation as a form of systematic neglect.

The TPLF called for the immediate removal of what it described as “occupying forces” from Tigray, the safe return of IDPs, and the full enforcement of the Pretoria Agreement. It also criticized the international guarantors of the deal the United States, the European Union, the African Union, and the United Nations for what it said was inaction in the face of ongoing suffering.

In its statement, the TPLF appealed to the broader international community “to act now” to prevent further humanitarian catastrophe in the region.
