Tigray Representatives to Gather in Addis Ababa for Agenda Setting

The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission has announced that the agenda setting process for the Tigray region will take place in Addis Ababa from April 1 to 3, 2026, as part of efforts to advance the country’s ongoing national dialogue.

Speaking at a press briefing, Chief Commissioner Mesfin Araya(Professor) said the nationwide agenda setting phase has reached more than 93 percent completion. However, the process has not yet been finalized in Tigray due to what he described as insufficient enabling conditions in the region.

According to the Commission, sustained consultations have been conducted over recent months to prepare the ground for launching the dialogue in Tigray. Mesfin Araya noted that more than 22 preliminary consultations were held in Mekelle and Addis Ababa. These engagements involved the regional interim administration, political parties, civic and civil society organizations, scholars, journalists, social media actors, religious leaders and community elders.

Despite these efforts, the Commission said the final agenda setting process could not be carried out within Tigray. Officials stressed that a national dialogue excluding Tigray would undermine the credibility and inclusiveness of the overall process.

As a result, the Commission decided to organize a dedicated agenda setting forum in Addis Ababa. The three day meeting will bring together participants from Tigray as well as Tigrayans living in Addis Ababa and other parts of the country. In addition to collecting public priorities, the forum will also identify representatives from the region for the upcoming national dialogue conference scheduled for April 2026.

Mesfin Araya said the Commission will continue working to create conducive conditions for conducting consultations across Tigray in the future. He called on stakeholders at all levels to participate actively and support the process to ensure its success.

The Chief Commissioner also stated that concerns raised by participants in earlier consultations have been compiled and submitted to the Prime Minister. Efforts are ongoing, he said, to address these issues so they do not become obstacles to the final national dialogue conference.

The Commission further indicated that coordination is underway with Ethiopian Airlines to facilitate transportation for participants traveling to Addis Ababa.

The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission was established to facilitate consensus on key national issues following years of political tension and conflict. The inclusion of Tigray has been widely viewed as an important step toward ensuring the credibility and comprehensiveness of the national dialogue process.
