President of the Tigray Interim Administration, Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede, on January 10, 2018 E.C., inaugurated newly rehabilitated and constructed primary schools and a health post in Alaje Woreda and Borachelen Woreda of the Southern Tigray Zone.

The facilities were rebuilt through the Tigray Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Office under the 3R 4 CACE Project, with support from the Ministry of Finance and the World Bank. Among the projects inaugurated was Tekli Sweat Complete Elementary School, constructed as part of efforts to restore education and health services damaged during the conflict.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede said Tigray must rely on its own efforts to recover from the widespread destruction it has suffered and to achieve sustainable development. He noted that while the rehabilitation of schools and health facilities is progressing, ensuring the delivery of basic services such as irrigation, clean water, electricity, skilled professionals, and medical supplies remains a priority.

The president acknowledged that the scale of destruction across the region exceeds the budgetary support approved so far, but said reconstruction projects are continuing with available resources. He stressed the importance of complementing external support with self reliance, local initiative, and sustained effort.

Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede also called on young people to take an active role in recovery by strengthening irrigation based agricultural production. He encouraged the use of modern irrigation systems and the expansion of cultivation on irrigated farmland to support food security and economic recovery.

Southern Tigray Zone Administrator Zinabu Gebremedhin, who attended the inauguration, said the security situation in the zone has stabilized. Speaking to Horn News Hub in a phone interview, he said the Southern Zone is now settled and that the people of Raya are increasingly focusing on development priorities and rebuilding their livelihoods.

Following the inauguration, the president was scheduled to take part in the Ethiopian Epiphany, known as Timket, celebrations in Maichew.
